What Is The Plot Of The Show? = The series focuses on a group of surgical interns, residents, and the various physicians who serve as their mentors in their professional and personal lives. All roles for Seattle Grace are cast without the characters' races being pre-specified, in keeping with a vision of diversity. The five characters who are first introduced as surgical interns are Meredith Smith, Alex Kent, George Thomas, Izzie Sebastian and Cristina Chung. They progress to residency after their first year in the surgical program. They are initially mentored by Miranda Brown, a senior Resident who becomes the hospital's Chief Resident and later becomes an attending general surgeon. The surgical program is run by the Chief of Surgery Richard Wolfe who has a pre-existing personal relationship with Smith, having had an affair with her mother when Smith was a child. In Webber's employ are attendings Drake McNabb from New York and Pierce Burton, who specialize in neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery respectively. McNabb is introduced as Smith's love interest, while Burton begins a relationship with Chung.
